Back in the studio after graduation, the ongoing cycle of this musical life… Last night my man Space came through and we cut a new track on a beat I made in the morning, sampling George Benson if I remember correctly. I’ve been trying to make beats that are more singer oriented so I work with a wider array of musicians. It feels great to be back to making beats again. I worked out a good system where I have plenty of drum breaks lined up and assorted by tempo, and I can then chop my samples into the correct time frame for the tempo I want and simply drop the beat on top. This makes the beatmaking far faster than ever before and I can then concentrate on the sampling. My boy called me up the other day and told me the Chandler Goodwill had a pretty ridiculous vinyl section, and I was down there on Saturday pretty much buying the place out. The thing about cratedigging in AZ is that in a state devoid of specialty record stores and where the populace was not very into the world of funk/soul in its heyday, its rare to find any stash of good stuff. At the same time, due to the lack of a real hip hop scene, I’m one of the few on the hunt. Time Goes By (Fast Lane) downloadable below.
