There are a lot of Dilla beats in the collective music conscious right about now. In the wake of the super-producers tragic death, the industry has been swamped with tributes, reissues, and talk of the legend. Some of these beats inspire a head nod but will simply be passed by as time goes on, but a real Dilla banger, one of the true instrumentals that warranted his branding as one of, if not THE, best in game, takes you beyond listening pleasure and into the aural realm of true hip hop. Track 3 on Ruff Draft entitled “Reckless Driving” is one of those heaters, and pounds in the whip the way true hip hop should. Combined with the experimental beauty of tracks such as “Nothing Like This” and the straight dope of “Crushin”, and considering the instrumentals come packaged as a second disc, this album is a necessity for heads still trying to find some light in the mediocre, oversaturated indie hip hop market. 4/5
